Sunday Worship (May 12th)

We continue our worship series on the book of Ephesians, entitled "A Bigger Story."  And this week we will dive deeper into the topic of unity.

Many people believe that unity includes thinking alike on all terms.  However, unity is defined as "the opposite of being divided.  It is being together or at one with someone or something".  This doesn't mean we must all think alike, because we can agree to disagree regarding our ideas.  However, we can remain united for Christ's cause and purpose and still hold different beliefs.

John Wesley, the father of Methodism, agreed with this thought.  Wesley said, "Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike?  May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion?  Without all doubt, we may.  Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding smaller difference".

Certainly, the idea of unity has been a part of God's plan from the beginning.  The author of Genesis explains that God created humanity to be in community.  "After God created man, God said 'It is not good for man to be alone.  I'll make a helper suitable for him' (Gen. 2:18)".  So, our need to be in community, our desire for connectedness, and oneness, is created in us.

Another example of oneness can be found in the Book of John 14: 20.  Here, Jesus is speaking to his disciples before he returns to the Father.  Jesus gives them comforting words to encourage them and let them know that they will never be alone.  Jesus proclaims that one day, the disciples will understand that they will be one with the Father and Jesus and they will all be connected.

God also has made us alive in Christ by the same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead.  And he has given us work to do; to create a dwelling place for God on earth.  We can accomplish this task by coming together to worship God in community and fitting ourselves together in unity, harmony, oneness, and love.

Come to worship and learn more about the topic of unity and how this fits into God's bigger story.
